dog beggingWho can resist feeding a begging dog table scraps?  Here are a few reasons why it may not be the best idea.  Here are some guidelines and facts about table food from your veterinarian in Berea.

Nutritional Diets for Dogs

Dogs require certain nutrients and the correct ratio of nutrients.  Today’s quality dog food provides all that a dog needs.  Adding handouts from the kitchen can interfere with the nutrition the commercial dog food is providing.  Most dogs that are given an abundance of people food soon learn to prefer it to their dry or canned dog food.  This can be a big problem unless you want to feed your dog a homemade diet that will fulfill his diet requirements.   Dogs who have food allergies may need to be on a special homemade diet and your veterinarian will be able to tell you what to feed your dog in those circumstances.

Feeding a dog table scraps will cause the dog to be obese if your not careful to only give healthy food and limit his regular food to compensate for the treats.  Foods high in fat and sugar provide extra calories your dog doesn’t need.  This is especially true if you have a small dog.  Many health problems occur in overweight dogs.

Foods high in fat like bacon and fatty meat can contribute to pancreatitis and inflammation of the pancreas with symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to blood infections and internal bleeding.

Dogs with diabetes should never be fed extra carbohydrates.   Salt, which is normally all right for a dog, can cause complications if your dog has kidney problems.  What a dog digests cannot always be controlled, but many items we offer as treats can complicate existing conditions or create conditions that are harmful to your pet.

Begging Dogs

Dogs will naturally smell the food at your table and want to be included in the family dinner.  It is hard to resist their begging eyes or forlorn look but if you don’t, it won’t be long until your dog is begging every time you eat.  This is often tolerated but quite embarrassing when you have friends over and the dog won’t leave them in peace.  Dogs who are used to feeding from the table will scratch, beg or howl to get a treat.   This isn’t so much because your dog likes table food better but because you have trained them to get food when you do.

What People Food Can I Feed May Dog

Despite the fact that dogs can do without people food and there are plenty of dog treats on the market that are the right size and do the trick, many people like to give their dogs food.

Your pooch can usually tolerate foods given in moderation and very small helpings.  Fresh fruits and vegetables from an approved list are a good example of acceptable treats.  Lean meat, such as, turkey, chicken, fish and lean beef are a good source of protein.

There are some foods you should never feed your dog.  If they ingest these foods they could die so you will want to contact your veterinarian right away.  They include chocolate, onions, macadamia nuts, grapes and raisins.  Other food will also cause your dog to have upset stomach so you need to be careful and watch how your dog reacts to certain food.  If you have any questions about your dogs diet please call Advanced Animal Care Berea at (859) 985-5678
