Advanced Animal Care

pet wellness examsPet wellness exams at Advanced Animal Care Berea are an important part of your pet's care.  In the last 10 years, studies show people are going to the vets less and less for wellness exams. This is a shame because your pet will benefit from a wellness exam, as the focus of an exam is to maintain optimal health.

How Often Should I Schedule Pet Wellness Exams

Your veterinarian is the best person to determine how often your pet needs to be seen.  This depends on your pet's overall health, age, breed and lifestyle.  Typically, a dog should be seen monthly as a small puppy, yearly during young adulthood and semi-annually as an older adult or for geriatric care.  There are no specific guidelines on how fast your dog will age.  This is dependant on other factors and the size of your pet.  Larger dogs age faster than smaller dogs for example.  By the time your dog is 6 years old, a larger dog will be a senior needing geriatrics and a smaller dog will be middle aged.

Cats also need well exams.  Often people forego taking their cats to the veterinarians because they can be hard to handle.  Cats that are under 6 or 7 should have a wellness exam yearly and over 7 they should be seen more often.   Your veterinarian will be able to tell you how often to bring your specific pet in based on his or her overall health.

What Should I Expect During A Wellness Exam

During your pet’s wellness exam, the doctor will do a complete physical examination of your pet.  This will include observing your pet.  It will also include asking you a variety of questions concerning your pet.   The doctor will want to know about diet, exercise, thirst, breathing, behavior, elimination patterns, lifestyle and general overall health.

The doctor will listen to your pet’s heart and lungs and feel for any abnormalities.  There will also be a few labs performed and wellness screening tests to make sure there are no hidden illnesses or parasites that need to be addressed.

The doctor will then give recommendations for your pet.  This will include preventative care, parasite control, weight management and dental care.  He may also recommend life style changes that will be better for your pet.
