FELINE CHIN ACNE

What is Feline Acne?

Like humans, your cat or kitten has sebaceous glands that lubricate the skin.  Cats also use these glands to mark their territory.  You may have noticed your pet rubbing his face on things.  When these glands get clogged (similar to your pores getting clogged) a black head or black plug will form.  These can then get infected or irritated and inflamed.

What Causes Cat Acne?

There is no exact cause for cat acne.  Some believe stress is a major cause, others blame in on overactive sebaceous glands.  Some irritation may be due to food allergies, contact dermatitis or bacteria in their food dishes.  Veterinarians suggest using metal or glass dishes to prevent your cat being exposed to bacteria that can get trapped in the small cuts and crevices of plastic dishes.  They also advise giving fresh water daily and washing bowls each day.

How is Cat or Kitty Acne Diagnosed?

Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination of your cat and tentative diagnosis is usually made based on the appearance of the chin. They may then take scrapings from the area to determine if another condition is present.  This may be a bacterial infection or a fungal problem.  Determining the cause will help in also determining what actions may be necessary to eliminate the feline chin acne.

What Treatments Are Available?

Depending on the cause, you may need to switch foods or bowls.  Depending on the severity of the infection or acne, you may need to clean the area each day.  Topical ointments may need to be applied, such as, an antibiotic or antifungal ointment.  Oral antibiotics may be necessary as well as something like prednisone for the inflammation.
